Development of High tech farming.

In the past, the Primary Production Department was formed in 1959 by 5 divisions.

The 5 divisions are,
1) Agriculture Division
2) Veterinary Division
3) Co-operative Division
4) Fisheries Division
5) Rural Division

These 5 divisions aid in developing and regulating local farming in Singapore.

However, High tech farming is not without its disadvantages. Singapore has tried many times to implement High tech farming but has been unsuccessful in many aspects. This is because of the following reasons:

1) Limited technology towards primary production.

2) Not predominantly self sufficient.

3) Limited amount of land.

4) High capital investments.

5) Shortage of trained workers.

6) Competition from cheaper imports.

High tech farming has its benefits. The reasons are as follows:

1) Higher harvests and income.

2) More vegetables consumed locally.

3) Less pesticides and fertilisers used

4) Environmentally friendly

5) Conserve land and water resources

6) Crops are carefully monitored to meet market demands so overproduction or wastage of resources is minimised.

7) High quality produce.

8) Less fuel used for transporting the crops over long distances.
